SANTA CRUZ ISLAND, GALAPAGOS - FEBRUARY 2007: A broad billed fly catcher lies dead on the side of the road from the airport to Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island. Scientists have estimated that a as many as 5,000 birds -- a significant percentage of the island's population -- are killed by cars on this road each year, prompting local officials to post strict speed limits. Whether the new regulations will decrease the death rate has yet to be determined. Traffic rates continue to increase dramatically as tourist visitation and the island's human population grow.
