ERNIE PASS, GATES OF THE ARCTIC NATIONAL PARK, ALASKA - JUNE 2000: As the tundra begins to thaw, a small creek near the crest of Ernie Pass rushes toward the headwaters of the Anaktuvuk River in Gates of the Arctic National Park, Alaska. The famed naturalist and conservationist, Bob Marshall, named the pass after a Scotish trapper he befriended during Marshall's first exploration of the region.
