Peter Danzig hikes along the Atigun River in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge on August 8, 2008. The Atigun River flows directly underneath the Trans-Alaska oil pipeline, and the Dalton Highway. The river, which flows down the north slope of the Brooks Range into the Arctic Ocean, is a popular demarcation point for backpackers and rafters entering the 19-million-acre refuge because of its proximity to the Dalton Highway, the service road for the trans-Alaska pipeline.
