These nomadic peoples, the Tuareg tribe, have lived out from Timbuktu for centuries. This area of Mali was an agricultural breadbasket with a huge lake system. The lake began to dry up 25 years ago and today no longer exists. Climate models predict reduced precipitation in the Sahel area as a result of increased greenhouse gasses.
