Bike Path in Fairbanks where bumps are caused by melting ice wedges in the permafrost. The wedges were caused by cracks which started when the ground was very cold over 10,000 years ago. When melt water gets in the cracks in spring it melts and thaws and the crack widens. This becomes an ice wedge of almost 100 percent ice, the soil is about 50 percent ice. So when they melt the ground drops by different amounts. Riding bike is Michael Romanovsky, 8 his brother Derek, 5, being helped by his mother, Noel.
