Katja Heinemann, originally from Germany, has lived and worked in the United States for the past 13 years. She is currently based in Brooklyn, NY. As an independent documentary and editorial photographer, her work has focused on intimate portrayals of people and every-day life in America, exploring issues of health and body consciousness, immigration, and more recently, the pageantry of American patriotism and militarism as experienced after September 11th.
Since the summer of 2000, Katja has been working on a new media documentary, On Borrowed Time, chronicling the lives of children and teenagers who have grown up with HIV and AIDS in the United States. Her resulting multimedia web site by Time.com won several awards in the 2002 POY and NPPA competitions.
Katja was a contributor to Chicago's independent documentary project, Chicago in the Year 2000, and her photographs have been included in the anthologies "Here is New York" (documenting Sep. 11) and "Pandemic - Facing AIDS" (Umbrage Editions.) Her editorial work has appeared in Time Magazine, US News & World Report, Stern, Newsweek, People, The Chicago Tribune Sunday Magazine, Bolero (Switzerland) and French Marie Claire, among others.
